Welcome to the Nance Genealogy Clearinghouse!  This site contains information on the history and genealogy of the Nance family in America.  Follow the links in the column on the right to see what's available here. Nance Genealogy Resources -- This site was established in 1997 as a place to facilitate the sharing of information about Nance genealogy.  At that time, the resources available for doing genealogical research on the internet, and for finding and sharing information with others researching the same names, were limited.  In the intervening years, though, many more Nance-genealogy-related websites have been developed.   Two particularly important resources for vital records and other data about Nances,  are the Nance Library at the website of Sonia Nance Kinback, and the Genealogy Website of Robert L. Nance. Two other good resources for communication and exchange of information between Nance researchers are the Nance Family Forum at GenForum (at: http://genforum.genealogy.com/nance/ ) and the Nance Message Board at ancestry.com (at: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/board/an/surnames.nance ). These are both fairly active forums and there is a good chance that someone with helpful information will be able to respond to queries posted there. Another resource is the Nance Mailing List. • Robert L. Nance - Genealogist and Family Historian
  This website is maintained by Robert Lee Nance, of Texas. The site traces the lineage DANIEL NANCE(b.abt.1706), to Thomas Nance (b.1740)(m. Hudson), to Hudson Nance (b.1766)(m.Hubbard), to John Nance (b.1791), to Hudson J. Nance (b.1818), and further. This line of Nances went into North Carolina. Bob's website has a lot of nance genealogy resources and data -- including an on-line version of "Nance Memorial". He also has additional information at  http://webpages.charter.net/bobnance/memorial.htm .

• Nance Library
  This genealogy website is sponsored by Sonia Nance Kinback, who traces her Nance ancestry back to  PLEASANT NANCE(1814-1892).  Sonia's website has a great deal of Nance genealogical information, including a great collection of information on Nance marriages, cemeteries, and other resources, as well as Nance census data from many states.

Nance Genealogies in print:

• "The Nance Memorial" by George W. Nance,   Bloomington IL, 1904 --  This was the first published Nance genealogy.  It is principally a genealogy of Clement Nance (b. 1756) and his descendants, but it has information on other lines as well.  Frequently abbreviated as "NM" by Nance family genealogists.
  
  There is good reason to have doubts about the reliability of "NM" in some of its analysis of the Nances in colonial Virginia.  Still, the book is an important source, and as a genealogy of the line of Clement Nance it is invaluable.  
  
  And -- it is available on-line!  At his Nance genealogy website, Robert L. Nance of Ft. Worth TX has posted the full text of the entire Nance Memorial.  Be sure to take advantage of this great contribution to on-line Nance genealogy research.   

• "The History and Genealogy of the Nances: but more particularly of the descendants of John and Jane Nance of Mecklenburg Co, VA" by D. Nance [1930] -- I have only seen excerpts of this book, reproduced in the Evelyn Nance Pyles book (see below). I have very serious doubts about the reliability of very significant parts of this book. Frequently abbreviated as "HG" or "H&G" by Nance family genealogists.

• "Nance Register" by Martin Luther ("Pete") Nance, Shreveport, La., 1966 --  This is the most definitive Nance genealogy, as well as the most recent. It attempts to trace all of the Nance lines in America -- although, as the book itself recognizes, it is still not possible to say exactly what the connection was between the heads of these lines, and the apparent immigrant forefather, Richard. This is also the best documented Nance genealogy, boasting an extensive section composed entirely of citations to records (marriages, property transactions, census data, etc.) confirming Nances. Frequently abbreviated as "NR" by Nance family genealogists.

  There are some sections of "NR" in which the lineages described are probably unreliable. One area of particular importance to me, concerns the lines of John and Martha Nance, Clement Nance, Giles Nance, the Nances of Newberry, SC, and others related to them.  I suggest that anyone interested in an introduction to these issues take a look at my article, "Unbreaking The Circle".  

  Notwithstanding this, "NR" is an invaluable resource, and should be viewed as the essential foundation on which genalogical study of the American Nance family must rest.

• "The Mitchener and Mitchiner families of North Carolina and other states and related families of Turner, Stevens, Nance, and Powell" by William Arthur Mitchener [Gateway Press] -- I have not seen this book, as it is not available in my local library. However, I was able to contact the author by mail. In correspondence, he told me that the book is principally about the ten children of Samuel Mitchiner. Two of those ten children married Nances: Martha Ann (Patsey) Mitchener married SIMEON NANCE, and John Mitchiner married SUSANNA EVELINE NANCE. I am not certain of the time period involved here, but some indication can be taken from the fact that Simeon Nance and his wife Martha Ann moved to Lowndes Co. MS in the 1840's. Simeon and Susanna Eveline Nance were both from Wake County, NC, and were children of Rev. George Nance, a Primitive Baptist Minister, and his wife Anna Clifton.

• "Eagles and Wrens : The story of families Slote, De Vries, Nance, Winslow, and other allied families"
  by Lois L. Slote Lehl, Portland, Or., 1982 --  This pamphlet clearly relies significantly on "The Nance Memorial". It follows the line of Clement Nance, who is supposed by "The Nance Memorial" to have been a son of William Howe Nance, the supposed brother of David Nance, Frederick Nance, and Martha (Patsey)(m. Sneed). 

• "[Nance] Family Scrapbook" by Evelyn Nance Pyles, Truth or Consequences, N.M., 1990 -- This book is mainly concerned with the more recent past of the author's family, but it incorporates information gleaned from both "The Nance Register" by "Pete" Nance and "The History and Genealogy of the Nances" by D. Nance. It follows the line from Daniel Nance (m. Eliz.) to his son Daniel (b.abt.1707) and that Daniel's son Robert, who married Ann Marshall and Merriman (Pennington). I believe that this book makes a serious error in designating the William Nance who married Tinsley as a son of the John Nance who married Jane (the subject of the D. Nance book). Nevertheless, its later information may be valuable. 

• "Malone and allied families " by Randolph A. Malone [2d and rev. Ed. ] [Thomasville, GA 1996] -- Why is a Malone Genealogy listed here? I'll let the book answer: "The Nance family was closely related to the Malone family in Amelia County [VA] and beyond", Malone and allied families, p. 232 . One look at the index confirms this: there are over 100 Nances listed, and there is good information about most of them. As the book itself states, "Daniel Nance figures prominently with this family in [property] transactions", p. 224-25 , and there is also Dolly Nance, who in 1804 married a son of Elizabeth Malone, and Thomas Nance, who in 1810 married Sarah Malone. More significant connections, which account for many of the Nances mentioned, are (1) the marriage of Giles Nance, born in 1735 to John and Martha Ann Nance, to Mary Nancy Malone, whose descendants are detailed through 8 children and down to the level of all 32 of his grandchildren who bore the surname Nance; and (2) the marriage of Isham Nance, born abt. 1747 to William and Ann Nance, to Frances "Fanney" Malone, whose 8 children bearing the surname "Nance" are detailed. This massive (over 1400 pages) work is exhaustively and scrupulously documented by reference to original records.
