Will Book IV, Amelia County, VA. pp. 41-43. Date of will 7 March 1786 and proven 27 April 1787. Until other information comes forth it may be assumed that the propositus of this will is the son of Joseph
Crenshaw, Hero of The French & Indian War.
"In the name of God, Amen. "I William Crenshaw of the Parish of Nottoway and County of Amelia being of sound memory and understanding, do this 7th day of March, one thousand seven hundred and
eighty six, make
publish and declare this my last will and testament to be as followeth, Viz:
I return my soul to almighty God beseeching his most gracious acceptance of it, trusting in the merits of my blessed Redeemer for the remission of all my sins and my body to its Mother Earth expecting its
resurrection at the last day, and to be buried at the discretion of my Executors; and as to the worldly estate it has pleased God to bestow on me, I give and bequeath it in the following manner.
First, after my just debts are paid I lend to my loving wife, the plantation and land l now live upon with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging. Also the following negroes: Will, Festus, Peter,
Ned, Beck, Dolly, Sal, Molley with their future increase, my household and kitchen furniture, my stock of horses, cattle, hogs and sheep, to hold the same and every of them during her life or
widowhood, and at the expiration of either of these periods.
I then give my son David Crenshaw the said plantation and land with all and every the appurtenances to him forever. The residue of this part of my estate held by my wife during her life or widowhood I give
and devise in the following manner, Viz: to be divided into ten equal parts, each of my children hereafter mentioned to have a part, viz: Robert Crenshaw, William Crenshaw, James Crenshaw, David
Crenshaw, Elizabeth Bullington, Ann Moore, Susanna Moore, Jane Irby, Sarah Wallis. The last and tenth part I give to be equally divided among my grand children, the children of David Nance,
Deceased and hereafter mentioned the survivors, or survivor, of them. I give to my son James Crenshaw one negro named Solomon forever.
I give to my son David Crenshaw 2 negroes named Jack & Kate with their future increase forever.
I give to my sons James and David Crenshaw my still to be divided at their option.
I give to my daughter Elizabeth Bullington, a feather bed and furniture, forever and I also lend to her 3 negroes, Diana, Frank and Tom with their future increase during her life and at her death the
said negroes with their increase I give to be equally divided among her children, forever.
I lend to my daughter Ann Moore, three negroes, Vinus, Jim & Winny, and their future increase and at her death I give them to be equally divided among her children to them forever.
I give to my daughter Susannah Moore one feather bed and furniture forever, and I also lend to her during her life three negroes, Hannah, Harry and Ester with their future increase and at he
death I give them to be equally divided among her children forever.
I give to my daughter Jane Irby one feather bed and furniture forever, and I also lend to her during her life three negroes, viz: Patt, Abb and Vall with their increase and at her death, I give
them to be equally divided among her children forever.
I give to my daughter Sarah Wallis a feather bed and furniture forever. And I also lend to her during her life 3 negroes, viz: Ruffin, Joan and Marge, with their future increase and at her death I
give them to be equally divided among her children forever.
Item. I give to my daughter Mary (CRENSHAW-NANCE) Seals 5 shillings sterling money.
Item. I give to my grandchildren David Nance, William Nance, Elizabeth Nance, Susannah Nance and Mary Nance the children of David Nance, Deceased and my daughter Mary, three negroes,
viz: Lucy Phil, and James with their future increase. Also a feather bed and furniture. It is my desire that this gift to my grand children is by no means to take place during the life of my
daughter Mary (CRENSHAW-NANCE) Seales, but in the meantime the aforesaid negroes, with their increase is to be entirely under the management of my Executors to be held by them and subjected
to the maintenance of my said daughter Mary in proportion to what they may hire for to be paid to her in quarterly or annual payments as they may judge the most beneficial to her, and at her decease the
said negroes, viz: Lucy, Phil and James with their increase I give to be equally divided among my aforesaid grand children the survivors or survivor of them.
Lastly I constitute and appoint my sons William Crenshaw and David Crenshaw, Executors of this my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal

last will and Testament all my land negroes & Estate both

In the name of God, Amen. I John
Nance being feeble in body & much affected with
disease, but of sound mind & memory make this my last will
& testament. In the first place I desire my just debts of
which there are but few to be paid.
2nd I give to my wife Martha A. (ESTES) Nance to have during
her lifetime the land upon which we live amounting to three
hundred and fifty ? and acres including the building and every
appurtenance properly belonging to the same. I also give to my
said wife the present crop, the plantation utensils of every
sort. I also give to my said wife, the household and kitchen
furniture of every kind. I likewise give to my wife to have in
like measure during her life time the following slaves to wit
Lewis, Dennis, Kanawaha, Squire, Fanny, Maria, and Harriett.
3rd I give to my son Thadeus C. Nance
my Difficult Creek Plantation and the sum of thirty dollars.
4th I give to my daughter Celia Ann (NANCE) Burnett half the
Roberts tract of land and one hundred dollars.- the last to be
paid her after the death of her mother & to come from the
dower estate.
5th I give to my son Spotswood A.
Nance the sum of one hundred dollars.
6th I give to my son Edwin T(homas) Nance half the Roberts
tract of land and a negro boy Amnion.
7th I give to my son Albert T. Nance
half of the ? Headen tract of land, a negro boy name “Home
Squire” & a bed & furniture.
8th I give to my son Benjamin E(stes) Nance half Sum of
fifty dollars
9th I give to my son Thorp H(oard) Nance a negro named
Aaron.
10th I give to my son John F.
Nance a negro boy named Billy & the sum of fifty
dollars which last is to be appropriated to his
schooling.

Margaret Nance the sum of four hundred dollars or a
negro girl worth that much must be bought for her

the sum of four hundred dollars or a negro girl worth that
much as she prefers. I also give my sd. Daughter a bed and
furniture and a side saddle.
14th I give to my daughter Emeline
Frances Nance the sum of four hundred dollars or a
negro girl worth that much must be bought for her
as she prefers. I also give my said daughter Emeline Frances the sum of fifty dollars to
be expended in her schooling. To her I also give a bed and
furniture and a side saddle.
15th It is my desire that after the death of my wife, the land
we live on shall belong equally to my sons Thorp H. and John
F. Nance and that they have no other interest in the
dower estate.
16th It is also my desire, that the negros left to my wife
during her lifetime shall after her death belong
equally to all my children except Celia
Ann Burnett and Edwin T. Nance
and Thorp H. and John F. Nance.
17th It is my wish that none of my sons now under age
shall have their legacy until they come to age and
in like manner none of my daughters now under age shall have
theirs until they come of age or marry.
18th It is my wish that the following slaves to wit will,
Milly, Old Prissy, Harvey, and Anthony and the
Roberts crop and all the stock there and plantation utensils
be sold.
19th I give to my son Thaddeus C. Nance
in trust for the benefit of my daughter Mary
Katherine (NANCE) Wade
And her children a negro girl named Eliza now in her
possession. I also require that her portion of the
dower estate be held and managed by
Thaddeus C. Nance for her benefit and that of her
children.
20th I appoint my sons Thaddeus C.
Nance and Albert T. Nance

Upon careful reflection I desire this the 7 of Octo 1846
the following changes in my will recently made and
witnessed by my friends Daniel Tompkins, Joseph Whitten and
John Fields to wit My sons Thorp
H. and John F. Nance are
not to have the land they live on after the death of their
mother. Since at a fair evaluation of the said land theirs
would be a larger portion of my estate than in justice to the
other of my children could be allowed them. I therefore desire
that my said sons Thorp H. and John F. have from my estate in
addition to what is named in my will for them the land
excepted each one hundred dollars and that each have a fifty
dollar ? saddle. And I desire that after the death of my wife
the land we live on as is to be the case with negros left my
said wife her lifetime belong equally to my following children
to wit Thaddeus C. , Spotswood A., Albert
T., Benjamin E., Thorp H. and John
F. Nance and to Thaddeus Nance
in trust for Mary Katherine Wade and
her children ? Lucy Elizabeth Wade,
Eliza Jane , Sarah Margaret, Martha Estes and Emeline Frances Nance. It is my
further wish that ? Lucy Elizabeth Wade
have the sum of ten dollars from the estate. It is
my further wish that Edwin T. Nance
and Celia Ann Burnett have each

WILL OF WILLIAM NANCE
In the name of God Amen: November the 17th, 1770. I, William NANCE, of the Parish of
Meherrin in the County of Brunswick,
being of sound disposing mind and memory, thanks be to
Almighty God for the same, calling to mind the uncertainty of
death and that all men must yield thereto when by God
required, do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament
as followeth towit: I bequeath my soul to God who gave, hoping
and trusting in the Merit and Advocacy of my Blessed Lord and
Savior Christ for the remission of all my first follies and
offenses, and my body I commit to the Earth to be decently
interred at the discretion of my executors hereinafter
mentioned, and as touching such worldly estate as it hath
pleased God to bestow on me I shall dispose in manner
following, after all my lawful debts are paid.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Isham NANCE and his heirs forever,
two hundred acres of land lying in Mecklenburg County adjacent
to Reuben NANCE and William Fox,
also one negro fellow named Harry, one pott, two chairs, bed
and furniture, thirty pounds in money and the third part of my
stock of cattle.
Item: I give unto my son John NANCE and to his heirs forever
the tract of land I now live on, also three hundred and ninety
acres of land lying in Mecklenburg County adjacent to Drury
Malone and Edward Epps, also my negro wench Winney, a negro
girl named Judy, one brass lock gun, one feather bed and
furniture, two chairs, one chest and the third part of my
stock of cattle.
Item: I give unto my son Reuben NANCE and to his heirs forever
two hundred acres of land whereon he now lives being the upper
part adjacent to Richard Warthin, also my negro boy named
Cook, a negro girl named Luse, one cuba gun, a mare named
Pigion, also a new market coat and the third part of all my
stock of cattle.
Item: I give unto my daughter Elizabeth Glover and to her heirs
forever one negro girl named Phillis, a white horse, a fourth
part of a negro girl named Hannah (when sold) and five sheep.
Item: I give unto my daughter Tabitha NANCE and to her heirs
forever one negro fellow named Frank, one bed and furniture,
five head of sheep, a mare named Poll, a fourth part of a
negro girl named Hannah (when sold).
Item: I give unto my daughter Mary
Lanier and to her heirs forever one negro boy named
Emmanuel, five sheep, and the fourth part of what my negro
girl sells for, also eleven geese.
Item: I give unto my daughter Sarah Lanier twenty pounds money,
one negro girl named Doll (now in her possession), a negro
girl named Sarah, also five sheep, and a fourth part of my
negro Hannah (when sold) to her and her heirs forever.
Item: I give my Sagathy coat to
John Lanier. My will and desire is that my crop of corn and
tobacco be sold to pay my debts, like I desire that all the
remainder of my estate (except my hoggs) that I have not
heretofore mentioned be sold, and after my debts and funeral
charges is paid, that the remainder part be equally divided
amongst my three sons; Isham, John and Reuben.
Item: I give all my stock of hoggs
to my son John NANCE. I do
hereby appoint make and ordain my three sons, Isham, John and Reuben my sole
executors of this my last will and testament. In
witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my
seal the day and year above written. his William X NANCE mark (Signed, sealed,
published and declared by the said William NANCE as and
for his last will and testament, in the presence of us who
were present at the signing, sealing and publishing thereof. Joseph

At a court held for Brunswick County the 25th day of February,
1771: This will was presented in court by Isham NANCE and John NANCE, two of the executors
therein named who made oath thereto according to law, and the
same being proved by the oaths of Joseph Floyd and Benjamin
Walker, two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be
recorded. And on the motion of the said executors, who
together with Charles Collier, Joshua Winfield and Josiah
Floyd their securities entered into and acknowledged their
bond in the penalty of three thousand pounds with conditions
as the law directs. Certificate is granted them for obtaining
a probate thereof in due form, and Reuben
NANCE, the other executor therein named personally in
court refused to take upon himself the burden of the execution
thereof or to join in the probate. Teste: P. Pelham, Jr. Clerk
of Court.

In the name of God, Amen, the twenty-third
day of December, in the year of our Lord 1771, I, Zachariah Nance, of Charles City county, being very sick
and weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be
given unto God, therefore calling unto mind the mortality of
my body, and knowing that is appointed for all men, once to
die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament;
that is to say principally and first of all, I give and
recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave it, and for
my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a
Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my
executor, nothing doubting but at the general resurreciton,
I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God,
and retouching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased
God to bless me in this life. I give, devise, and
dispose of the same in the following manner.
Item. I give and bequeath to my son James, one tenant saw.
Item. I give to my son John Nance, the remainder part of
my land whereon I now live, after his mother's death.
Also my long gun, also one cow and yearling commonly called
his, also one sow and three young hogs commonly called his,
also two young ewes, the stock, the stock and gun, at my
death, to him and his heirs.
Item. I give unto my daughter Elizabeth Nance, after her mother's
death, two Negro women, Venus and Fillis, also two cows and
one calf, always called hers, at my death, to her and her
heirs.
Item. I given unto my son William, one Negro bow called Ned,
when he comes to age, also one small gun, to him and his
heirs, also my wearing apparel.
Item. I give unto my daughter, Susannah Nance, after her mother's
death, one Negro girl, named Morning, also one gray mare,
when she comes of age, to her and her heirs.
Item. I give unto my son, Zachariah Nance, after his mother's
death, one Negro boy named Tom, to him and his heirs.
Also my will and desire is that all my
remainder of my estate I give unto my beloved wife during
her life, and after her death, to be qually divided amoung
my four youngest children, that is to Elizabeth,
William, Susannah, and
Zachariah.
Also my desire is that my son, James and Henry South, are my whole
and sole executors of this my last will and testament.

soul I recommend to Almighty God, who gave it to me, hoping
through the merits and intcession of my blessed saviourn Jesus
Christ to obtain a pardon for my offenses towards God + Man.
My body to be committed to the earth, and decently inter'd at
the discretion of my Executor, and Executrix here after
mentioned , and as to the ***** estate with which it has
pleased God to bless me with I give and bequeath the same in

Imprimis my Will and desire is that as soon as may be after my
death my Executor and executrix hereafter mentioned shall
dispose of one or more of my Negros to pay my just debts and
funeral expenses, and if there is amy money remaining there
from to be considered as part of my estate.
Item my Will and desire further is that my loving wife shall
have use of my remaining estate during her widowhood for the
support and Education of my Children. In case she marries my
desire is she shall be put in one third as the law directs,
and at her death to revert to my estate.
Item My Will and desire is that all my estate shall be equally
divided amoung my surviving Children as soon as the oldest
comes of age or either of them shall be married, which
proportion I give to them + their heirs forever.
Lastly I do ereby appoint my friend Henry ARMISTEAD? junior
Executor and my loving wife Executrix of this my last Will and
testament, hereby revoking all other Wills by me me heretofore
made In Witness where of I here unto set my hand affix my seal

to belaid out in land by the said trustees, where they shall
think proper, for the use and benefit of my son, Thomas, his
wife and six youngest children, during his and her natural

land so purchased by the trustees, to my two grandsons, William Nance, son of Thomas, and James
Nance, son of Zachariah,
to them and theirs forever. My will and desire further is
that the residue of my estate lent to my son, Thomas, after his and his wife's
death, be equally divided amoung his six youngest children,
to them and their heirs forever. I also constitute and
appoint my son Zachariah Nance
and Daniel Palmer, trustees, to the estate lent my son, Thomas, to sell my land as before
mentioned, and apply the money arising from such sale as

eighth of May, 1787, during the natural life, and after her
death to be equally divided amoung her children, except the
two eldest, to them and their heirs forever.

granddaughter, Levinia Francis Bates;
one Negro woman named Charlotte, and her increase for the
year 1794; also one feather bed and furniture with all the
stock of household and kitchen furniture now in her
possession, to her and her heirs forever.
Item. I give and bequeath to my grandson,
William Nance, son of Thomas Vaughan Nance, one feather
bed and furniture, and one mare colt that was got by the
horse Garrick, to him and his heirs forever.

granddaughter, Mary Vaughan
Winters-Tucker, one Negro woman named Rachel (alias
Frosty), and her child, Matt., with her future increase; one
feather bed and furniture, two cows and calves, and one sow
and pigs, to her and her heirs forever.

granddaughter, Mary Nance, one
Negro girl named Rhoda, and her increase; also one feather
bed and furniture now in her possession, to her and her
heirs forever.

be sold by my executor hereafter to me mentioned, at twelve

My will and desire is that the hands be
kept together till the crop is finished. Further, my will
and desire is that two of my Negroes, (to-wit), Lewis and
Bess, be free to act and do for themselves. I also desire
that only that part of my estate be appraised that is to be
sold. Lastly, I o hereby nominate, constitute, and appoint
my friend, Peter Barksdale, executor of this last will and
testament, hereby revolking all others.

In the Name of God Amen. I Allen Barker of Henry
County VA being of reasonable health and in perfect
delebrate mind & memory do hereby determine to make this
my last will & testament revoking and disannuling all
other wills made by me. declaring this will to be my last will
& testament, disposing of any property in the following
manner as written. I having sold to Pleasant
NANCE forty Acres of land for value rec the lines to
run as follows. beginning on Seukvile? road in Harris line
thence Harris' line to Dan'l Taylors line. thence Taylor's
line sufficiently to get the forty Acres thence with the road
to the beginning which land I guarantee a good & landfull
right & title to him the (symbol which I take to mean
aforesaid) NANCE, his heirs,
ect, forever. 2nd I give & bequeath to my beloved wife
Isbell Barker the entire balance of my land together with
everything I possess, real & personal of my estate for her
use & for her benefit, to have & to hold in peaceable
possession during her natural life except 1 steer & 1 bed
& furniture after her death I give to my grandson John A. NANCE (Pleasant NANCE and Eliza BARKER's son)
3rd, after the death of my beloved wife I desire & will
that all of my children shall be legal heirs, & that an
equal division shall be made amongst them in my estate. So
that my daughter Sally Barker, wife of Guilliam Barker shall
have her portion of land on the west side of the L. road
adjoining said Barker land. 4 I do hereby appoint my sons
James & Charles Barker my executors to this my last will

In the Name of God amen. The 10th day of January
1812
I Reuben
Nance of the County of Henry and the state of
Virginia, being very weak in body but in perfect sound
memory but calling to mind the mortality of the body and
that it is once appointed for all men to die, as for my
body I leave it to be buried in a Christian like and
decent manner at the discretion of my executors and my
soul to return to God that first gave it, not doubting but
at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again
by the mighty power of God and as touching my worldly
estate which I now have and which it may be pleased God-to
bless me with I mean to devise and dispose of in form and
manner as forms, viz.
First all I give and bequeath to
my beloved wife, Nancy Nance
one negro man slave named Benn, one cow and calf, and one
feather bed and furniture forever to dispose of at her own
discretion.
Secondly, I further give and bequeath to my beloved
Nancy one negro man named Isaac and negro woman named Dyan
one negro boy named Will, one negro girl named Hester, one
negro boy named Perry, one negro boy named _____, one
negro boy named Simon, one negro boy named Joe, the family
of the said Isaac, one negro woman named Janey with all
her increase in her natural life or widowhood.
Thirdly, I give and bequeath to
my beloved wife Nancy Nance one
wagon and team, one still, with all plantation utensils
necessary for her use, and twenty head of meat cattle,
during her life or widowhood, also my blacksmith tools,
and all my flock of hogs in like manner.
Fourthly, my land and plantation
house and household furniture, my mill and that land
whereon the mill stands I give to my beloved wife in the
manner above mentioned.
Fifthly, my desire is that my old
stock of Negroes should be divided between my oldest
family of children I had with my first wife, viz, to my
beloved son William Nance
only a deduction of one hundred and seventy dollars I have
already paid him into his part of the legacy, to him his
heirs and assigns forever, secondly to my son Bird Nance, my son Allen Nance, my son Clement Nance, my son Joseph Nance, their heirs and
assigns forever, also to my daughter Mary Crouch, Susannah McCulough, and Tabitha Shackelford, viz, Bess's
children one negro man named George, one negro named
Peter, one negro man named Moses, one negro man named
Robb, one negro woman named Rachael, one negro girl named
Jiney, one negro boy named Fill, with all their increase
the same Negroes to be equally divided amongst the within
and above mentioned children their heirs and assigns
forever, as to my son Isaac Nance,
my son John Nance, my son Reuben Nance, my son Isham Nance, and my daughter Sarah Sandford, I have given each
of them their proportionable part of my estate as legatees
as follows, viz, my son Isaac Nance
has received 100 pounds in full for his part, my son Isham Nance has received 100
pounds in full, my son John
has received on negro girl named Anny in full, my daughter
Sarah Sandford has received
one negro girl named Liza in full, my son Reuben Nance has received one
negro girl named Lucy in full, my desire is that all the
within mentioned Negroes except Benn and the within
mentioned property except one cow and calf and one feather
bed and furniture that I gave to her, Nancy my wife for her to dispose
of at her own discretion should be equally divided amongst
my last children, first my son Stephen
and Peyton Nance, and Sarah Philpott and Edmund Nance, and Lessenby Nance and Nancy Nance and Reuben Saunders Nance, their
heirs and assigns forever.
Lastly I nominate and appoint my beloved friend
Benjamin Jones to be my sole executor and Thomas Starling.

The last will and Testament of Harden Nance of Henry
County and State of Virginia
I Harden Nance Sr considering
the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of
sound mind and memory do make and publish this my
last Will and Testament in the manner and form that
following Viz
1st I give and bequeath to my wife Mary Nance everything I
leave behind me during her life after my debts being
paid
2nd I give and bequeath to my daughter Lucretia Watson all the
lands I have in possession on the north side of
Stuarts Creek after her paying me the Sum of Two
hundred dollars for which I will give her my receipt
when paid.
3rd I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary R King all the land I
have in possession on the southside of Stuarts Creek
after her paying me the sum of Two hundred dollars
for which I will give her my receipt when paid.
As to my personal estate moneys, I bequeth in the
following manner viz.. I give and bequeath to the
sons and daughters of Henry
Nance decd. one eighth part to be equally
divided between them. the remaining seven eights I
bequeath to my sons and daughters and one grand
daughter that I consider fatherless to be equally
divided between them whose names are as followes. Sally Sams, Fontain Nance,
Lucretia Watson, Catherine Sams, William H. Nance,
Mary R. King and Manda Lavenia King.
Lastly I hereby constitute and appoint my friend
James D Dunn and Lucretia
Watson My sole Executor and Executrix of
this my last will and testament hereby revoking all
former wills made by me at anytime in witness hereof
I have hereunto set my hand and seal with my own
hand this 15th February 1876

The Last Will and Testament of Hardin Nance was
produced in court and proven by the oath of James R.
Stovall a subscribing witness thereto and ordered to
be recorded. and on motion of Lucretia Watson the
Executrix hereso named who made oath as to the law
entered into and acknowledged a bond conditioned as
the law directs in the penalty of one thousand
dollars with D. P. French he security which said
bond being acknowledged in order to be recorded.
Certificate is granted the said Lucretia Watson for
obtaining probate of said will, whereupon she took
oath required and liberty is given James D. Dunn the
other executor to hereafter qualify if he chooses to
do so

In the name of God, Amen: I, John NANCE, of Lunenburg County, and parish of
Cornwall, being of perfect health, sound mind and memory,
but calling to mind and duly considering the uncertainty of
human life, do make and ordain this as my last Will and
testament.
First; I do commit myself to God, My
creator and preserver, trusting to his mercy, by the merits
of his blessed redeemer for the remission of all my sins, my
body to be decently interred at the discretion of my
executor hereinafter named, and as to the temporals it has
pleased God to bestow on me I give and dispose and bequeath
thereof, in the following manner:
I give and bequeath to my son, John, one shilling sterling.
I give and bequeath to my son, Thomas, one shilling sterling.
I give and bequeath to my son, Richard, one shilling sterling.
I give and bequeath to my son, William, one shilling sterling.
I give and bequeath to my son, Frederick, the land and plantation
whereon I now live, being three hundred acres (except the
use of all that part of the plantation that lies on the

remain in the possession of my two, Elizabeth and Molly, during the whole time of
their remaining unmarried, and no longer, and then the same
with all privilages and appurtenances of the whole three
hundred acres to become the property of my son, Frederick, his heirs and assigns
forever.
I give and bequeath to my
daughter, Sarah, one shilling
sterling. I give and bequeath to my daughter, Jane, one shilling sterling.
I give and bequeath to my
daughter, Phebe, one shilling
sterling.
I give and bequeath to my daughter, Susannah, one shilling sterling.
I lend unto my two daughters, Elizabeth and Molly, the cleared land and
plantation houses, orchards, ect., on the north side of the
river, together with my negro man, Jack, during the whole
time they shall remain unmarried, and then the same to
descend to my son Frederick,
his heirs and assigns forever.
I give and bequeath all the rest of my
estate be it of what nater soever it will (After my just
debts and legacies be paid) to be equally divided between my
two daughters, Elizabeth and Molly, to them their heirs and
assigns forever. When either of my two daughters shall
marry, she is no longer to enjoy any privileges in the land
and negro, but then to be totally in the possesson of the
one that remains single, and when they both married or die
which shall happen first, then same is to descend to Frederick, and not before.
Lastly, I do constitute my sone Thomas, whole and sole exeutor of
this my last Will and testament, making null and void all
oter wills heretofore made, and do hereby ordain and declare
this to be my last will and testament.

said John Nance's giving Security according to Law it's

which I now have deeds for, my horse bridle and her side
saddle, two beds and furniture which she is to have during
her lifetime and after her death to be disposed of as

NANCE and his heirs forver, part of the land I now
live on, beginning at a corner on a red oak on TATUMS line,
thence on a straight, nearly north to my spring thence down
spring branch to Cool Creek, thence across said creek, a
straight line to a corner spanish oak on Frederick NANCE Jr. line including
my dwelling with all my land on the east side of the
aforementioned line together with my CRAFTONS land if
I ever obtain a deed for same.
Item I lend unto my son John Webb NANCE the bal. of my land
lying on the west side of the above land including the HOSA
house, during his natural life and after his death to be
divided between all my children hereafter mentioned provided
my son John Webb NANCE ever
has lawful issues then the aforementioned land I give him
and his heirs forever.
Item, to my son George
NANCE and his lawful heirs forever, two negroes
(Dice & Sterling) and their increas, also one feather
bed and furniture, one horse bridle and saddle my executors
hereafter mentioned to have recourse to him so that he may
not make away with the negroes and the horse, bridle and
saddle contrary to the intention of my will.
Item I give to my granddaughter
Susanna JACKSON one rearing beast of œ12 value. My
grandson Robert JACKSON and his
heirs forever one good feather bed and furniture.
Lastly the residue of my estate, including
a tract of land I purchased of James WILLIAMS on the head of
liles Creek to be sold at the discretion of my executors
hereafter mentioned and the money to be used to pay my just
debts, the balance to be equally divided among my children

Item first I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Milly NANCE two hundred dollars to
her and her heirs. Item second, I give and bequeath
to my Grandson Edward Poythress twenty five dollars to him
and his heirs. Item third, I give and bequeath to
my Grandson John Poythress one hundred dollars to him and
his heirs Item fourth, I give and bequeath to my
Grand Daughter Martha Giles Daughter of my Daughter Betsy P.
Giles two hundred dollars to her and her heirs.
Item fifth, and last after all my just Debts funeral
expenses and the above legacies are first paid it is my will
and desire that the remainder estate be equally divided
amoungst my four Living Children Jean P Basey, John Giles,
Edward Giles and William Giles to each of them and their
heirs, given under my hand this 10th day of March 1818. I

named Daul and all her children and their increase and one
negroe fellow named Joe and one negroe boy named Gorge and
all the personal estate that I possess him with and money
that is owing to me to him and his heirs forever.
Item. I give unto my son BENJAMIN MARSHALL one negroe
wench named Eady and all her children that I possess with
and their increase and all the personal estate that I
possessed him with and money that is owing to me to him
and his heirs forever.
Item. I lend unto ROBERT NANCE(**) and my daughter ANN NANCE one negore wench named
Cate and her child Dick during either of their lives but
after their decease, i give them to my daughter ANN NANCE's surviving children
excepting JUDITH NANCE to
them and their heirs forever.

all the personal estate that I possess him with and money
he owes me to him and his heirs forever,

Lastly I nominate and appoint my two sons SAMUEL
MARSHALL and JAMES MARSHALL executors of this my last will
and testament and as trustees to see this will executed
hereby revoking and disanuling all former wills by me made
and declaring this to be my last will and testament. In

PENNINGTON of the County of Mecklenburg being lame in
body but sound memory but calling to mind the
uncertainty of human life do make and ordain this my
last will and testament in the following manner to
wit.
Item I give and
bequeath to my son James one Negro man named Daniel to
him and his heirs forever. My desire is that the said
Negro be hired out ten years if not called for sooner
and the money and Negro devised therefrom to my son
James and his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my
son Phillip one Negro woman Peg and everything I have
lent to him to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my
daughter Sarah one Negro man named Austin and one mare
called Pall and one bed and furniture. My desire is if
my daughter dies without lawful issue of her body that
the said Negro Austin and mare shall belong to my son
John Thomas and his heirs forever.

one Negro woman Judy to my daughter Faitha NANCE and her lawful
issue of her body and at her decease if no issue then
living then the said Negro to be divided among all my
children also one cow and calf, one bed and furniture
now in her possession.

son Henry two Negroes named Edmund and Dilsey and what
have lent him before to him and his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my
daughter Mary one Negro man named David one bed and
furniture and one woman's saddle also the third choice
of my horses. If she dies without lawful issue of her
body the said Negro to be divided amongst my children,
except son John Thomas.
Item I give and bequeath
to my daughter Lewcy SMITH one Negro man named Ben,
one bed and furniture, one woman's saddle and one cow
and calf as she has now in possession to her and her
heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my
granddaughter Pegga PENNINGTON one Negro girl named
Viney and one bed and furniture and if she my
granddaughter Pegga should die without lawful issue
the legacy left her shall belong to my son Phillip and
his heirs forever.
Item I give and bequeath to my
son John Thomas six Negroes namely Jacob, Nancy,
Antony, Moses and Aron and George, three beds and
furniture my cart and wheels and one yoke of oxen, one
mare and colt that's called now his to him and his
heirs forever. My will and desire is that John HALL
Junior may keep sixty five acres of land as he bought
of me lying on the south side of Mitchell's Branch
which is one line and my old patent line the other
line and the balance of my land I give to my son John
Thomas to him and to his heirs forever; also my
plantation utensils and one third of my pewter. The
balance of my pewter to be equally divided between my
two daughters Sarah and Mary. Also I give my
three children John Thomas, Sarah and Mary all kitchen
furniture equally divided also I give Sarah one chest
and Mary one chest also my chairs to be divided
between John Thomas, Sarah and Mary. Also I
give my son John Thomas one cow and calf. Also I give
Sarah and Mary each of them one cow and calf all the
balance of my cattle to be equally divided between my
five children John Thomas, Faitha
NANCE, Lucy Smith, Sarah and Mary. Also
my sheep to be divided between Lucy SMITH, Sarah and
Mary. Also I leave my stock of hogs and my crop
to pay all my just debts and the balance to support my
three children John Thomas, Sarah and Mary. Also all
my fowls to support the plantation. Also my
two horses not before willed I give Lewcy Smith choice
and John Thomas the other horse with my saddle and
gun. Also my wearing apparel to my son Henry.
Also my will and desire is that Robert PENNINGTON may
keep two beds and furniture as I bought for him as he
has them now in possession to him and his heirs
forever. Also it is my will and desire that my
two daughters Sarah and Mary may have the small room
of my dwelling house during their natural lives or
marriage. Also it is my will that my two
daughters Sarah and Mary have free privilege of
working their two Negroes on the said plantation
during their natural lives or marriage. Lastly
I appoint my son Phillip and my son John Thomas
executors of this my last will and testament revoking
and disannuling all former wills by me made. In
witness I have hereunto set my hand and seal this
twenty-seventh day of September in the year one

At a court held for Mecklenburg County the 18th day
of June 1803. This will was proved by the oaths of
John Northington and William Ladd Taylor witnesses
thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion
of John Thomas PENNINGTON the surviving executor
therein named who made oath thereto and together with
John Northington and Jabiz Northington his securities
entered into and acknowledge their bond in the penalty
of ten thousand dollars conditioned as the law
directs. Certificate was granted him for obtaining a
probate of the said will in due form. Teste. William
Baskervill, Cl. Cur. Mecklenburg County, Virginia Will
Book #5, page 161: An appraisement and inventory of
James' estate was taken on July 27, 1803 by John
Hubbard, John NANCE,
William Bugg and John T. PENNINGTON. Its total value
was given at 998 pounds, six hilling and nine pence.
It included such items as goats, cows, geese, a gun,
four horses, various furniture, various plantation
utensils and Negroes named Jacob, Edmund, Austin,
Daniel, David, Ben, Anthony, Moses, Aron, Pegg,
Dilsey, Viney, Nann and her child.

THORNTON of Pittsylvania County
and state of Virginia
being in good health in body and of perfect mind and
memory being sensable that is appointed for manonce to
die and knowing that my latter end is drawing near I
do by thesepresents make and ordain this to be my last
will and Testament, I resign my soul into the hands of
almighty God who gave it and my body I recommend to
the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at
the discretionof my Executors nothing doubting but at
the general resurrection I shall receive the same
again by the mighty power of God and as touching
suchworldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to
bless me in this life I give devise and dispose of the
same in the following manner and form,
First I lend unto my beloved wife
MARY THORNTON one third of my estate during her
natural lifetime thence to be divided amongst all the

remainder of my property, I wish my Executor to sell
on such credit as he may think most advisable and the

(she now lives with me) the above bed and furniture I
wish sold and the proceeds paid over to my son REDMON.

"17 Mar 1857-- In the name of God Amen. I Samuel
Gaulding, Sr. of the County of Pittsylvania and the
State of Virginia being of sound and disposing mind
and memory do make and publish this my last will and
testament hereby revoking all former wills by me
anytime heretofore made. Imprimis-my will is
that all my just debts and funeral chares shall my
executors hereinafter maned be paid out of my estate
as soon after my decease shall by them be found
convenient.
Item- I give and bequeth to my
beloved daughter Jenny Gaulding my negro boy named
Harry and also the first living child which may
hereinafter be born my negro woman Kate.
Item-I give and bequeth to my
beloved daughter Letitia Gaulding my negro boy named
Stephen and my negro girl named Mary.
Item- I give and bequeth to my
beloved wife (Mary NANCE**)
my two negro women Kate and Mary for and during the
term of her natural life and after the death of my

they both survive my said wife and if not it is my
will and desire that the two said negro women shall go
to which ever of my said daughters shall survive my
wife provided nevertheless that this said negro woman
Kate shall have the privilege of choosing to which of
my said daughters she shall belong in the event they
both survive my wife.
Item- I hereby execute and appoint
Abraham Rover and John James to be executors of this
my last will and testament in -- of the Witnesses
names below, this 22nd day of October 1852.
